United are currently in the process of preparing a £40m bid for Ajax and Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez.

Martinez has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks, however United have stepped-up their interest in the Argentine in an attempt to land his signature ahead of their Premier League rivals. TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook says that Ten Hag is a “big admirer” of the centre-back.

United’s interest in such a player is no surprise, given the fact that Martinez featured 74 times for Ajax under Ten Hag, it is apparent that the new United boss believes that some of the players whom have previously played under his management may be suited to this ‘new-look’ United. This can also be seen in the case of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, whose arrival at Old Trafford, according to several reliable outlets, is imminent.

The signing of Lisandro Martinez would no doubt be a welcome one for United fans, particularly when considering the fact that United suffered their worst defensive record in any Premier League campaign last season, conceding 57 goals. Captain Harry Maguire has seen his future at the club questioned, along with counterparts Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe, all of whom are centre-backs like Martinez.

Martinez is considered to be one of the best and most versatile centre-backs in the Eredivisie. If he does sign, he has the potential to create a formidable partnership with one of Harry Maguire or Raphaël Varane. Alternatively, he could form part of a back three along with those previously mentioned, with his respective abilities meaning he could very well be suited to such a role.
