Ever since Erik ten Hag was confirmed as the new Manchester United Manager, United fans expected the club to be linked with Dutch players, Ajax players, and former players of the Dutchman. This is exactly the case with Frenkie de Jong.

United have been linked with a vareity of players that correspond to the three above criterias such as Tyrell Malacia, Jurrien Timber, Antony, Matthijs de Ligt and Denzel Dumfries.

On the 11th of May ,though, immediately after Ajax had sealed the Eredivisie title and Man United won the FA Youth Cup, very reliable journalist close to Barcelona, Gerald Romero broke the news that "Barcelona have almost sealed a deal with Manchester United for Frenkie de Jong."

The news sent the whole footballing world into meltdown, because it emerged out of nowhere. What followed was a sleepless night for journalists to try and find out more about this move, but also for fans, especially Barcelona and Man United ones, who were waiting patiently to learn what had just happened.

Even though we now know that the statement from Romero was a bit exaggerated, the journalist is top tier for Barcelona so everyone believed that there was ,at least, something to it because it was quite a statement for him to come out and say this. It would be almost reputation breaking if it was wrong from him. The story definitely had some truth to it.

One day later, British journalist Jonathan Shrager came out and calmed the waters stating that "The agreement for Frenkie de Jong to move to Manchester United is not close. But if Barcelona need the finances they might consider his sale in the summer." Which after a couple of days, seemed to be the case.

In the same day ,Fabrizio Romano, came out with the statement "There has been contact for Frenkie de Jong but there is no full agreement as of today. Barca's financial situation could affect the future of the player but the player wants UCL football however Ten Hag will push for it."

So it seemed that Barcelona was open to selling the player because of the financial disaster that they're still dealing with, Manchester United were definitely more than interested in De Jong but the player wasn't keen on the move because of the lack of Champions League football next season at Old Trafford.

What followed in the following weeks was confirmation that the fee of the transfer which Barca would want is around €80 million (£68 million). But they would probably have to settle for €70 million (£60 million) which is what United want to pay. Also, many people like Barca's President Joan Laporta and coach Xavi have come out and said that Frenkie de Jong is a very important player for the club but also mention at the end the financial situation of the club. Which shows that the club don't wish to sell the player but is probably forced to.

There will be an update on the Frenkie de Jong situation later today exclusively on the UtdActive youtube channel. (

If Frenkie does ultimately choose Unites as his next club, he will be the symbol of the Erik ten Hag Era, playing in the best league in the world and backed by the best supporters possible.

It is very important to be noted that Barcelona have a financial deadline of 30th June, before which they have to raise an amount of money which would mean to sell a valuable player. And if we take into consideration that the Catalan club wants to make significant transfers this summer such as Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich and Raphinha from Leeds United, it looks certain that they will need to sell Frenkie De Jong to Manchester United.
