Manchester United's Captaincy Crisis

With Harry Maguire's role as Club Captain under serious threat, who are the candidates to replace him?

Harry Maguire has had a woeful season, as have many other players at Manchester

United, but his lack of leadership and control has been evident to see. From several leaks within the dressing room, to refusing to carry out post-match interviews after a plethora of heavy defeats, Harry Maguire has clearly shown that he does not have the mettle to be Manchester United club captain. But who does? Well, here are the candidates being considered for the prestigious and privileged role.

Bruno Fernandes is the man that Ralf Rangnick believes should be club captain, and this has been communicated to Erik Ten Hag. The Portuguese midfielder had a stellar first six months at the club, and managed 18 goals last season, playing in a free role, almost as a false nine under Solskjaer, but this season, he’s been absolutely dismal. In terms of leadership, whether United win lose or draw, Bruno has never been shy to speak from his heart to the cameras, but, he’s shown increasing levels of pettiness, as his form has worsened at an exponential rate. He’s someone who could be moulded into a fine captain, but first he must remodel his game, in terms of improving his control with his passing and shooting, and learn the balance to control his emotions, and be able to motivate a team.

David De Gea is one of two players within this squad, who has been in a title winning squad at Manchester United, and he’s been rock solid in goal for the club for a decade. He certainly had a poor 18 months in between 2019 and 2020, but he’s undoubtedly been Manchester United’s Player of the Season, making many fine saves, with his well-known agility and reflexes rescuing the club many points, and he saved two penalties! He is a player who was removed from captaincy under Solsjaker due to an interview he gave after a dismal 1-0 loss to Newcastle away, where he was brutally honest and reflective, showing he is able to empathise with, and understand the true feelings and emotions of the fans. He is certainly a strong candidate for the role.

Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly captain material, and he has lead by example this season, putting in many fine performances, and scoring 24 goals in 38 games. He’s had numerous match winning goals against the likes of Villareal and Atalanta in the Champions League, and his hat-trick giving the club a thrilling 3-2 win over Spurs. He’s certainly the fan favourite for the role, and is seen as the favourite to take the armband next season.
