Ten Hag’s Side Win the Biggest Game in English Football: Match Review

In a 2-1 victory, Erik Ten Hag’s side were triumphant over Liverpool tonight, in what could be considered a turning point for the Red Devils.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho put United 2-0 up before the hour mark, however the players that shone were the defenders.

Stellar performances from Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez kept Liverpool quiet for most of the game, until a loose ball fell to Salah to head home in the 81st minute, increasing the blood pressure of all fans wearing red tonight.

Up until this point, Salah had been struggling against new signing Tyrell Malacia, in a top performance from the ‘smiling Dutchman’.

United held onto their lead though, which was produced by a moment of magic from Jadon Sancho in the first half, and a Rashford one-on-one in the second.

In the midfield, Scott McTominay finally showed what he can do, though it may be too late for the Scottish international, with positional peer Casemiro walking onto the Old Trafford pitch before the match.

Christian Eriksen also featured in the midfield, playing in a slightly deeper role, where it became evident he does not have the pace, nor defensive awareness, to play in a double-pivot in the long-term. His quality on the ball was evident though, highlighted by a narrow free-kick miss from the edge of the box.

Bruno Fernandes then displayed exceptional leadership qualities, notably as well as Raphael Varane, in the absence of captain Harry Maguire.

Cristiano Ronaldo was also on the bench, which may have allowed the intense press to function in the first half, in which Anthony Elanga fed off of Alexander-Arnold’s defensive weaknesses.

Erik Ten Hag will be happy with his teams performance today, where they finally showed the fight and passion that United fans crave amidst a powerful anti-Glazer protest.

Will United demonstrate their inconsistency yet again next Saturday, or will we see more of the same quality in the early kick-off at St. Mary’s?
