Manchester United 4 - 1 Melbourne Victory

Manchester United followed-up from their emphatic win against rivals Liverpool in Bangkok on Tuesday to earn a deserved win against Australian side Melbourne Victory at the Marvel Stadium.

United fell behind early on when their noticeably high line was exploited by Victory winger Folami, who combined with Ikonomidis to give the Australian side an unexpected lead.

Following this was a half in which United dominated the ball for large parts, yet struggled to create many clear-cut chances. United midfielders McTominay, Fred and Fernandes all saw efforts either saved or fly just wide of the goal.

As half-time approached, United’s dominance paid off when a deflected shot from Scott McTominay looped over Victory’s goalkeeper Paul Izzo to restore parity between the sides. Then on the cusp of half-time, United took the lead through Anthony Martial after a series of smooth passes down the right hand side, primarily involving Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, whose cross found Elanga and eventually Martial fired home to continue his good pre-season form.

Wholesale changes were made at half-time, with academy products Tahith Chong, Zidane Iqbal, Charlie Savage and Ethan Laird all getting a run-out.

Throughout the second half, United continued to dominate possession, creating a number of chances and showing complete control in the game. United defender Eric Bailly steamed forward and played through Marcus Rashford who finished smartly to give United breathing space. The game was rounded-off when Tahith Chong’s cross was turned home by Victory defender Edmond Lupancu to give United a 4-1 lead.

The game included a rather sentimental moment when Luis Nani, formerly of Manchester United, came off the bench for Victory to make his debut against his old club, receiving a standing ovation from both sets of supporters as he entered the pitch.

What’s next?

United will continue their pre-season tour when they face Premier League opposition Crystal Palace at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
