Who Else Could Depart United This Summer?

The previous number of weeks have proved largely frustrating for United fans, as the club attempts to bring in new personnel in the hope of reclaiming lost ground on their rivals. However, though new signings are undoubtedly key to Ten Hag being able to succeed here, the Dutchman will begin to recognise certain players who don’t quite align with his long-term vision for the club. Manchester United have already confirmed that Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Nemanja Matic will all leave the club when their respective contracts expire at the end of June, while veteran Lee Grant has announced his retirement. There will likely be more outgoings before the end of the transfer window than simply those listed, so who could also potentially leave the club?

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The 24-year-old defender arrived for £50 million in the summer of 2019, and in his first year proved his worth by consistently performing at a high level. His defensive abilities in particular caught the attention of many, recording the highest number of tackles in the 2019/20 Premier League season. However, the defender has struggled for form in the past year. Particularly under the management of former interim boss Ralf Rangnick, the right-back has often found himself to be the second choice to Portuguese man Diogo Dalot. For Ten Hag, he may look at Wan-Bissaka as a player with much potential and the ability to improve under good coaching. Recent reports however suggest that Wan-Bissaka could face a loan move to his former club Crystal Palace, possibly with the inclusion of an option to sign him on a permanent basis. If Wan-Bissaka is to be loaned out, it would allow him a fresh opportunity to remind people of what he can do, potentially paving himself a way back into United’s starting eleven.

Dean Henderson

The young goalkeeper enjoyed a stellar loan spell at Sheffield United before re-joining the Old Trafford camp in 2020. He made 26 appearances for United over the course of the 2020/21 season, however this number dropped to 5 the following season. The goalkeeper situation has been a topic of much debate among United fans. If Ten Hag favours De Gea, on the back of what has been an excellent season for the Spaniard in terms of his performance, then it could mean that Henderson faces another season with limited game time. Nottingham Forest have shown a keen interest in the Englishman, which could perhaps indicate that Ten Hag sees Henderson as surplus to requirements. Alternatively, he could be granted an increased amount of game time, allowing Ten Hag to fully assess the situation and to decide who he wants as his number 1 for the longer term.

Anthony Martial

When Martial joined in 2015, he was the talk of the town after scoring in front of the Stretford End merely minutes into his debut as United beat Liverpool 3-1. However, injuries and inconsistencies in form have raised questions over whether or not his time at United has reached its end. A loan move to Sevilla seemed a positive development for the Frenchman, a chance for him to regain form in new surroundings. But with only one goal to show for his efforts, this move, unfortunately, hasn’t worked out as planned. For Ten Hag, he is confronted with the choice of whether or not to give Martial another chance to prove his worth. In the event that Martial is sold, this could potentially raise funds for a new striker, as Ten Hag will no doubt be aware that current United frontman Cristiano Ronaldo will only be here for a couple more seasons at the very most.

Axel Tuanzebe

The highly trustworthy reporter Fabrizio Romano confirmed a few weeks ago that United would part ways with Tuanzebe, along with fellow -back Eric Bailly. Little information is known regarding whether a deal is close for either, however, in the case of Tuanzebe, it may come as a surprise that a player who appeared to have much promise now sees his United career likely to end. Loan spells at Aston Villa and Napoli have not been viewed as credible enough by the club to offer the 24-year-old another opportunity under the Old Trafford lights. At times, Tuanzebe has clearly displayed his defensive qualities for United, perhaps most notably when he produced a coming-of-age performance against French giants Paris Saint-Germain in October 2020, as United claimed a 2-1 win. However, this performance seems distant now, and for Tuanzebe it is likely that he will have to search for a new start at another club.

Other Potential Exits

30-year-old defender Phil Jones could make his exit from United. Leeds United have reportedly shown some interest in signing the Englishman, but no concrete offer has been made yet. Jones made just 4 league apprentices for United during the 2021/22 season, and in recent years has seen his game time thoroughly limited due to injuries and lack of form. Brazilian left-back Alex Telles could also be subjected to a transfer. In his two seasons at United, Telles has performed decently but could be moved on in an attempt to increase transfer funding. As mentioned previously, Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly could potentially leave the club. The centre-back joined in 2016, but since then has struggled for consistent game time amidst an injury-stricken United career. It has been reported that French clubs Marseille and Lyon are particularly interested in acquiring his signature.
